Barry Smith , né le 4 juin 1952 , est un philosophe britannique qui enseigne à l' Université de Buffalo (New York, USA). Il est également chercheur au New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences . Il a été, de 2002 à 2006, directeur de l' Institute for Formal Ontology and Medical Information Science à Leipzig et Saarbrücken .
Smith est l'auteur de quelque 450 publications, dont 15 ouvrages à titre d'auteur ou d'éditeur, et éditeur de la célèbre revue The Monist . Ses recherches portent principalement sur l' ontologie formelle.
